Conquering Tremendous Challenges

Posted on March 15th, 2008

Are we about to experience a major world recession?  The signs are there that indicate it is likely.  So how can we prepare and protect ourselves for this eventuality?

It will be even more important than ever to be flexible and creative in our thinking, to stretch ourselves, continue to grow and develop resilience.  Oddly enough, challenging times can bring out the best in people.  Stories abound of how people have discovered talents and strengths they never before thought existed within themselves when they were faced with difficult circumstances.

Being fearful of the future is counter-productive, because negative thoughts have a tendency to draw what you don’t want towards you.  However, giving consideration to some focussed strategies  to position yourself in the best possible way is probably a wise move.

My friend, Richard Yiap, is currently working with groups of people to help them dig deep into their collective unconsious wisdom, thereby revealing innovative ways in which they can be prepared for major world transitions.

Richard, an Advanced Buzan trainer and Master NLP practitioner, along with Douglas Peacock, an expert in energy intuition, will be presenting a free seminar in Melbourne, on Tuesday March 18, 2008. Called ‘Prospering in Tremendous Challenges’, it will be held at Wheelers Hill Hotel, Cnr Ferntree  Gully Rd and Jells Rd, Wheelers Hill. 7 - 9.30pm

I was at Richard’s last seminar and was impressed by this powerful process.

Lifelong Learning

Posted on March 10th, 2008

With the rate of change in our world seemingly increasing day by day, the concept of lifelong learning is something we need to embrace or we run the risk of being left behind.  If we want to continue to be influential and relevant in whatever sphere we operate in, we MUST stay up to date.  We will never know it all - acquiring new skills is necessary.  So, no matter what our age or experience, there are times in our lives when we once again find ourselves in the role of ’student’.  For someone who has been accustomed to being in an authority position this can be very humbling. But recognising that it is indeed possible to ’teach an old dog new tricks’ can be very liberating.

Anyone, given reasonable health and determination, can continue to grow and make valuable contributions to the world.  There isn’t necessarily a ‘use by’  date, after which we retire from life and significance, if we don’t want that to be the case. There are many examples of people who have achieved wonderful things later in life.  One of the most well known is Grandma Moses, who began painting seriously in her seventies and was in her eighties before she achieved major success and recognition. Whenever, I think of her story, I am inspired by it and think, “Wow, I am capable of so much more and there is still time!”

My personal challenge at the moment, is to acquire more computer skills and learn about  and utilise the immense possibilities the Internet has to offer for communication and business development.  I have been a teacher all my life but once again I have returned to the role of learner.  I have done this many times over the years in a variety of personal and professional situations. There have been numerous challenges to face and solutions to be found.

Although the responsibility for acquiring, implementing and eventually mastering new learning has been ultimately mine alone, I have found that one of the most helpful means of moving forward has been identifying and tapping into the strength of a support team.  My support teams at various times have been made up of one or several people. They have helped with expertise, encouragement, honest appraisals of work done or motivation.  In whatever way they helped, they were a positive influence and enabled me to maintain forward momentum even when the going got tough.

So, in my mind, support teams are essential in determining strategies for success. My current support team consists mainly of my Internet coach, Matt, a knowledgeable and patient man, my brother, my mastermind group and my two very encouraging daughters.  There are also other individuals that move in and out of my team as particular needs have to be addressed.  It’s nice to know that you are not alone on the journey.
